Sunset Bay (Leaving)

Except for brief stints in Ocean Shores, Cottage Grove and San Ramon, I had survived on Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches and trail mix the whole trip. The night at Sunset Bay had drained my resistance, so I decided on having some comfort food for breakfast. I would stop at the first greasy spoon restaraunt I could find. Surprisingly, it was not until 8:20am at Port Orford that I found anything that fit the bill. I even drove through Bando and could not find anything suitable for brakfast.

The place I chose had a great view of rocky islands typical of the Port Orford area (at least it did until the decrepit old owner arrived and parked his Suburban in front of my view). I was served my chicken fried steak with eggs and hashbrowns before I could unfold my napkin. I was not sure if the exorbinant price was for the extra grease or the atmosphere of elderly residents taking pleasure in their morning routine of hacking and dozing.

After breakfast I parked in the parking loot of the nearby viewpoint and relaxed to the sound of the ocean while I worked on another journal entry. By 10am I was on my way and by 10:30 I was pulling in to a surprisingly deserted Mount Humbug State Park. The name was fitting for my mood at the time, but not for the park. It was a large park for the number of spaces and include a large grassy area for ball games, multiple hiking trails (one I snuck my bike on), and superb access to a beach. Its only drawbacks were that it was not close enough to the ocean for the crashing waves to drown out the highway 101 traffic, and the beach sand was coarse in nature.

This reminds me of a time in elementary school where one of the other kids invited me along on a trip to Port Orford with his mother Mrs. B. I don't remember much of the trip except we went to a place called Agate Beach to look for Agates to be polished with the B's rock polisher. It seems strange that I was able to do this because I cannot recall any other overnighters I was able to accomplish without my parents being called because I was homesick.

I set up camp and immediately started exploring the park.
