Astoria |
| I arrived in Astoria around 12:30 pm determined not to let my mishap at Fort Canby affect the rest of the trip.
I had decided the large hump on the Oregon side of the bridge would not be worth the effort to cross by bicycle.
I took a quick tour of the downtown area. I found the library which I would later use to check my email. They would
not let me upload my web pages. I headed south on 101 expecting to park around 7 miles away and ride my bike back to begin my bicycle journey. On the way out I spotted a Fred Meyer's in Warrenton and decided to check out their digital cameras. I was disappointed. No Kodaks at all. I had maded up my mind to buy the same camera again or the next higher Kodak with an optical zoom. Dejected I walked back to my car. Something caught the corner of my eye. It was the bright red Costco sign plastered on the side of a massive warehouse. I was saved. As it turned out they had the Kodak, I thought I wanted on sale for the same price as my old one ($50 off with a coupon). I bought the camerea. My only disapointments with it were it was twice the sice of my old camera and ran on AA batteries rather than Lithium Ion like my old one. Other than that it had a higher resolution and an optical zoom that my other did not have. Finally I was on my way. Eight miles south of Astoria I found a nice county park on a lake 1/4 mile from the highway. I set off on my bike around 2:30 pm and returned from Astroia at 4pm. Ten miles per hour average again. The ride was fun. the bike lanes were wide except on the two-mile long draw bridge I had to cross. Once again it was uphill both ways and a strong head wind on the way back. The new camera worked fine, except it seemed to have a hair trigger and I took a lot of pictures of my feet. I was a little excited. After a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and some trail mix I felt energetic physically and mentally. The first leg was complete. Seaside was only eight miles down the road so I started looking for my next place to start. |
